Djed-Khons-Iwef-Ankh :: I wrote this as a reaction/description of an exhibit of a mummy in the McClung Museum at the University of Tennessee. I think it is probably the strongest poem of the semester, and it was published in a small chapbook for the museum at the end of the class.

'A woman alone - gloriously alone' is a quote from the english translation of Wings of Desire. paternity test :: This poem was meant to be a sort of letter of gratitude addressed to the amazing support system I had during my pregnancy. A brief allusion to REM's 'Belong' in the first line. riddle :: This poem won Honorable Mention in the poetry category of the 1997 WSCC creative writing competition. It was published in the 1997 edition of the WSCC anthology Among These Hills, and published in West Greene High School's 1997 edition of Trails West. It was also published in the fall '97 edition of Collage, and remains, to this day, one of my most favourite poems that I have ever written. scarlet :: This poem won 1st place in the county division and honorable mention in the district division of the 1996 Andrew Johnson Club creative writing contest. It was also published in West Greene High School's 1996 edition of Trails West. precious whore :: 'You must learn to stand up for yourself, 'cause I can't always be around' is a quote from the Tori Amos song, 'Winter'. 'Precious whore' in an allusion to a Nine Inch Nail song. It also was included in my application to Governor's School, and may well be one of the reasons I was accepted. |
